Posted on: May 30, 2011 by Michael Roach
From Sept 17th to Oct 25th 1964, the American embassy in London commissioned Paul Oliver's 'The Story of the Blues' Exhibition. It covered the entire ground floor of the embassy. The exhibition has been in storage for 47 years. From the 4th June, we will be showing the original exhibition at our resource centre on the first floor in the Gloucester Library. The exhibition has 18 titles. They are as follow: From Africa to America; From Work Songs to Blues; The Negro Migration; The Country Blues; Blues Guitarists; Piano Blues; Jug and Washboard Bands; The Blues They Played; They Sand the Blues; The Blues They Sang; The Classic Blues; Blues and Entertainment; Jump Jackson and His Band; South Side Blues; Blues on Record; Post War Blues; The Folk Blues Today; and "R 'n B" "R 'n B".
We will be showing the exhibition in parts (changing every 3 months because of space limitation) starting with 'From Africa to America' and 'From Work Songs to Blues'. On Saturday 18th June, Paul Oliver will be giving a talk about the exhibition starting at 1pm.
